CASLI Certification Compared to BEI Certification

Did you know? There are more and more ASL interpreters choosing to take the BEI compared to the CASLI RID Certification. Surprisingly the BEI Certification is now accepted in more than 22 states nationwide!! In this vlog I compare some of the main differences between the two ASL Certifications which are shocking, 😳, yet lead us to believe that one benefits the test taker more than the other. In my experience in taking the former NIC and the new CASLI NIC Performance I have seen my score increase and decrease depending on the rater’s take on how well my interpretation was in that moment compared to the BEI which as both objective and subjective ratings based on facts and not solely on the raters’ opinions. The beauty of being a test candidate for both the new CASLI Performance exam and the BEI (Basic and Advanced) I have seen the testing process, the raters’ feedback, and my own growth as a test taker. The BEI is by far the more beneficial exam because of its diverse feedback and vignette variety which tests your ability to interpret both ASL and English as well as transliterate receptively and expressively. We have seen the BEI performance test gain popularity as the community sees the value of whom it qualifies as certified compared to whom the CASLI deems as not certifiable. Overall the certification exams are extremely different and from my perspective the BEI should have recognition nationwide as a qualified certifying exam for ASL interpreters (both hearing and deaf.)
